The Buckeyes are hiring former Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith to the same role, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. After months of speculation, the Buckeyes have found their guy.
Smith becomes the fourth offensive coordinator to join the Buckeyes staff since 2024, a list that includes Bill O’Brien, Chip Kelly, and Brian Hartline. Hartline announced his departure from the team in December to accept the vacant head coach position at USF. He served as the team’s offensive coordinator for just one season, replacing Chip Kelly, who left for the Los Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator job. Kelly emerged as a last-minute hire by the Buckeyes after Bill O’Brien’s brief tenure ended.
Smith got his start in coaching in 2006 as a graduate assistant for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Smith quickly moved up the ranks and found himself in the NFL just one year later. Smith bounced around for a bit before landing a job as the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator in 2019, where he had great success. He was then hired as the Atlanta Falcons’ next head coach in 2021 before ending up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith received interest from multiple NFL teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans, but opted to come to Columbus instead.
The recent trend of hiring former NFL assistants has worked out quite well for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. The hiring of former New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator Matt Patricia proved to be a fantastic move as the Buckeyes set numerous college football records this past season across multiple categories. Former offensive coordinator Chip Kelly played a vital role in the Buckeyes national championship season before returning to the NFL. Arthur Smith will look to continue this trend and bring the Buckeyes offense back to life in pursuit of a championship next season.
