The Oregon Ducks’ season is over, but the transfer portal sparks excitement for next season to begin. Dan Lanning is no stranger to taking swings in the portal, and this swing is a big one. Former 5-Star Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola has committed to Oregon, and fans are unsure of how to feel.
Many college football fans have been irked by Raiola’s personality, particularly his resemblance to and idolization of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, antics aside, there is no doubt that Raiola has tremendous talent.
Oregon fans have seen this move before. A former 5-Star talent with a little baggage comes to Eugene, and some people are not very happy about it. However, the last time the movie played, it ended with said talent being realized, becoming a Heisman finalist, and moving on to quarterback the Denver Broncos. Now, fans can only hope that the Ducks do the same for Raiola as they did for Bo Nix just years ago.
After just nine games last season, Raiola’s sophomore campaign would be cut short due to a serious leg injury. Before the injury, Raiola seemed to be taking that second-year jump, with 2000 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions on a 72.4 percent completion rate.
Now, the major question is whether this is a sign of the current Ducks’ QB Dante Moore leaving for the NFL Draft. There has been speculation on Moore returning after a disappointing performance in the Peach Bowl, but Oregon still awaits his official decision. Many were quick to write off a potential return with the news of Raiola committing to the Ducks, but according to various reports, it is possible that both QBs could be in Eugene next season. If Moore stays, Raiola would redshirt and serve as the backup, taking over as the starter in 2027.
Whether Raiola starts next year or not, this was a good move for the Ducks. With Oregon’s successful history of bolstering transfer QBs and their resume, it makes sense to take a swing at a talent like Raiola. If Moore comes back, and Raiola sits out a year behind him, this could pay off massively for Oregon.
