It seemed like if anyone turned on a sports-themed TV show on Monday, then Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian was going to be on it.
Sarkisian headed out on a full-court media blitz, preaching about how the Longhorns should be strongly considered to be a part of the College Football Playoff.
The Longhorns are coming off a convincing 27-17 win over previously unbeaten Texas A&M team. The Aggies entered last Friday’s game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, as the No. 3-ranked team in the College Football Playoff Rankings.
As for Texas, it sat at No. 16, which would not get it into the College Football Playoff.
Sarkisian appeared on ESPN and “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on Fox Sports, while also holding his usual Monday morning press conference.
“I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished and unequivocally I think we should be in the playoffs… There’s two teams ranked in front of us that we just beat,” Sarkisian told Cowherd.
While on ESPN, Sarkisian noted how Miami finished up its 38-7 victory over Pitt last weekend by throwing a late touchdown when the Hurricanes really didn’t need to do it.
“Throw fade route touchdowns with 38 seconds to go when you’re ahead 31 to 7 so that the score looks better,” Sarkisian said as he appeared to be upset that Miami was ranked above the Longhorns in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Miami, 10-2 on the season, rose one spot in the AP poll to No. 12. As for Texas, 9-3 this season, it rose two spots but was put in the No. 14 spot.
People looking at Texas’ schedule have pointed toward the Longhorns’ loss against top-ranked Ohio State and unranked Florida as a couple of reasons Texas should not be in the College Football Playoff.
On Monday, Sarkisian said about playing tough non-conference games, “We’re going to 9 conference games…We’ve played five Top 10 teams…There’s teams in front of us that have played none…We’ve got to put ourselves in a better position to get a better record.”
The new College Football Playoff Rankings will come out on Tuesday night on ESPN. Sarkisian will be watching to see what College Football Playoff Committee Chairman Hunter Yurachek, who is also Arkansas’ athletic director, has to say.
Should the Longhorns be kept out of the College Football Playoff, don’t be surprised if Sarkisian has some choice words for the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
