Wisconsin picked up its first transfer portal commitment of the 2026 cycle on Saturday with the addition of Iowa State safety Carson Van Dinter. The Badgers landed the in-state product following an official visit to Madison.
Van Dinter returns home after spending two seasons with the Cyclones. He originally signed with Iowa State as a three-star recruit in the 2024 class out of Kaukauna High School and was considered one of the better safety prospects in the Midwest coming out of high school.
After redshirting his true freshman season and appearing in two games, Van Dinter saw an increased role in 2025. He played in 11 games and finished the season with 18 tackles and one pass breakup. His best performance came late in the year when he recorded six tackles against Kansas.
According to On3, Van Dinter is ranked as the No. 123 safety currently in the transfer portal. He will arrive at Wisconsin with three years of eligibility remaining.
Van Dinter stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 190 pounds, giving him an advantage in size at the safety position. Wisconsin’s secondary experienced noticeable turnover this offseason, making defensive back a clear area of need for the coaching staff. With several veteran safeties no longer on the roster, Van Dinter will have an opportunity to compete for playing time right away.
His size and familiarity with Big Ten-style football make him a nice depth addition with upside as he continues to develop. For Wisconsin, this is a solid early portal pickup and a move that makes sense on multiple levels. Van Dinter gets the chance to play closer to home, while the Badgers add a young defensive back with experience and remaining eligibility.
With the transfer portal still open and more visitors expected in the coming weeks, Wisconsin appears to be just getting started as it looks to reshape its roster ahead of the 2026 season.
